A patient's own fat is an excellent filler material, which can be used to reverse the thinning of the lips, in deep wrinkles between the eyebrows, crow's feet, and smile lines. It is unnecessary to undergo testing prior to undergoing fat injection, since it is your own fat, but the results are variable from patient to patient. Fat injection may correct an area permanently, or may have to be repeated. There is usually some degree of loss following the injections, so Dr. Newkirk usually overcorrects the area when injecting.
When doing a fat injection, the area from which the fat is removed is injected with a dilute solution of local anesthetic, which numbs the area, makes the fat easier to aspirate, and decreases bruising. The fat is removed, rinsed, concentrated and injected into the wrinkles.
Advantages of fat injection are that it can be done under local anesthesia, there should be no lost work time after the injections, and, if necessary, the injections can be repeated, The only side effect that Dr. Newkirk has seen is slight bruising.
